Château de Tiffauges : The biggest medieval site in Vendée
We invite you to live an unforgettable half-day at the heart of the Middle Ages.
A strong and strategic fortified castle
Standing firm and proud on its rocky crag, this fortress was erected during the 12th century. Its 700 meters long outer wall is reinforced by 18 tours and contains remarkable architectural treasures.
The covered walkway with its 37 machicolations is an amazing construction where you’ll discover a curious acoustic phenomenon.
The crypt situated under the Romanesque chapel Saint-Vincent will surprise you with the thinness of its columns and with the quality of its finely worked capitals.
Gilles de Rais
Companion in arms of Joan of Arc, lord of Tiffauges and Marshal of France, Gilles de Rais had the castle transformed into its major achievement.
This mysterious figure of the history of France gave also birth to the legend of Bluebeard.
Many areas will let you discover the life in the fortress during the Middle-Ages: high definition 3D movie, shows, medieval war machines in operation and activities for the whole family.
The château de Tiffauges gives the opportunity to learn the history and its treasures in an entertaining and educational way.
